Why Reading Gets Harder as You Age (and What the Research Says Helps)

You know the feeling. A paragraph you've read three times and still can't repeat back. A page that used to take two minutes now takes five. A study published in the journal Vision and archived by the National Institutes of Health looked at exactly this question in healthy older adults. The researchers found a measurable decline in reading ability with age, but when they tested simple reaction time, visual attention, and other single components on their own, those didn't decline the same way. What did decline was a combined measure of attention, working memory, and processing speed working together. In the study's own words:

"We found a decline in reading abilities as a function of aging."

The Research on Training It Back

The encouraging half of this story is that processing speed responds to training. The largest study of its kind, the NIH-funded ACTIVE trial, followed more than 2,800 older adults for two decades after they completed just five to six weeks of cognitive training. Participants who received speed-of-processing training, the kind that helps you take in visual information faster, were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with dementia over the following 20 years than those in a control group.

Dr. George Rebok, one of the study's site investigators at Johns Hopkins, said the findings offer:

"...support for the development and refinement of cognitive training interventions for older adults.

Brain imaging research at the University of Utah, looking at what happens during this kind of training, found significantly more of the brain activating at once compared to typical reading, engaging regions well beyond the language centers most people associate with reading.

Why the Brain Stays Adaptable
