Most people have caught themselves doing it: you look up a phone number, use it once, and it's gone thirty seconds later. Does Technology Affect Memory? What the Original Study Found

The most cited study on this is a 2011 experiment led by Harvard psychologist Betsy Sparrow, published in Science and summarized by Columbia University's research office. Sparrow's team ran a set of experiments to test what happens to memory when people expect information to stay retrievable somewhere else.

In one experiment, participants who believed their answers would be saved to a computer remembered those answers worse than participants who believed the file would be erased. In another, people were better at recalling which folder a piece of trivia had been saved in than at recalling the trivia itself. Across the experiments, the pattern held: when people expect to be able to look something up later, they tend to remember less of the content itself and more about where to find it again.

Researchers call this transactive memory: treating an external system (in this case, a search engine or a device) the same way you'd treat a person you split remembering with. You don't memorize everything your closest collaborator knows, because you trust you can just ask them. The 2011 findings suggested people had started doing the same thing with search engines and, by extension, their phones.

Why that isn't the whole picture

A 2026 study published in Frontiers in Psychology adds an important piece the original research couldn't test. The researcher, Jian Wang, surveyed 468 university students about their use of digital tools for tasks like note-taking, calculations, and organizing information, then measured critical thinking, task persistence, and learning depth.

The result: offloading tasks to a digital tool was not, by itself, linked to weaker thinking. What mattered was whether someone still felt confident in their own ability to think through a problem. Students who trusted their own reasoning tended to use tools as support and did fine on measures of critical thinking and depth of learning. The tool wasn't replacing their thinking. It was freeing up attention for the parts of the task that actually required it.

Put the two studies together and a clearer picture forms. Does technology affect memory? Not in one fixed direction: it depends on what's being offloaded and whether the underlying skill is still getting exercised somewhere.

The distinction that actually matters: storing versus training

A phone number is a fact. Once you've dialed it, there's little reason to keep it in your head, and letting a contacts app hold it costs you nothing. Reading quickly, focusing through a distraction, or holding several ideas in working memory while you write are different. Those are abilities, not facts, and abilities only stay sharp with practice.
