If your children are to excel in school, you’ll need to develop a strategy for doing homework. Homework management begins with organizing your workspace so it is efficient and easy to work in. Here are a few ideas anyone can use to make even a small amount of space more functional.
Choose the Right Space
Start by choosing the right space, which should be somewhere that is comfortable and has an adequate amount of lighting in it. It should ideally be somewhere that’s away from most of the traffic in your home and somewhat quiet as well. If you don’t have a room you can dedicate to homework, create a nook in your kitchen or living room by partitioning it off with bookcases or folding screens instead.
Encourage your children to keep their school supplies neat and organized by taking metal cans and painting them with bright paint or covering them with wallpaper. Use an over-the-door shoe holder to hold small supplies such as glue sticks, scissors or crayons in. You can also attach spice racks to the sides of a bookcase to make a place for storing binders, folders or story books.
Creating Multiple Stations
If you have more than one child, it’s important for each one to have his or her own space to work in. That doesn’t have to be a challenge, even if space is somewhat tight, as a few practical ideas you can use are:
- Placing a worktop on either side of a two-sided bookcase, leaving the shelves available for storage.
- Separating a long counter with a set of drawers, and then placing a smaller bulletin board over top of each seating area for notes
- Dividing a small alcove underneath a set of stairs with floor-to-ceiling shelves, with a sitting area on either side
Make it Attractive
Most of all, you want your homework area to be one your children will enjoy spending time in. Add a colorful rug or throw pillow and hang some of their own art work in frames nearby. You’ll be surprised at what a difference these few added touches will make.
